Frequently Asked Questions

1) When was Central Mass Club Lacrosse founded?

CMass was founded in the Summer of 2006.”The goal of Central Mass Club Lacrosse is to provide female lacrosse players with the very best instruction and the opportunity to play in local, regional and national recruiting tournaments, while having a lot of fun playing the game we all love and making life-long friends.”

The recruiting tournaments offer our high school players an excellent opportunity to be seen and evaluated by Division I, II and III coaches. CMass offers those girls who are passionate about the game of lacrosse with the opportunity to take their game to the next level.

3) What is unique about Central Mass Club Lacrosse, compared to other club lacrosse organizations?

  • Superb coaching: CMass focuses on improving the skills of every player in the Program, all the while instilling a team concept. Particular attention is paid to improving stick skills and teaching sound defensive techniques. We teach the game the “right way” emphasizing only the most current skills and techniques. Playing within a team concept is critical to success in the summer recruiting tournaments, given the high skill level and experience of the club teams that we compete against.
  • College recruiting assistance: Players aspiring to play in college will benefit from the guidance and input from Stephanie Ridolfi, Head Coach at Holy Cross College and Abbey Capobianco, the Head Coach at Assumption College.
  • Roster stability: Our rosters remain the same for the entire year. This allows our coaches to develop a strong relationship with each player, knowing her strengths and areas to improve. Week to week, and tournament-to-tournament our rosters stay the same, promoting consistency, familiarity and camaraderie within each team.
  • Small size: CMass is a relatively small Program and we intend to keep it that way. We strive to attract those players and families who are passionate about the game of lacrosse; will support the coaching staff at all times; and will “honor the game” by playing within the rules and spirit of women’s lacrosse.
We do not define our success by the number of players in the Program. We look for great athletes, with great attitudes, who want to take their game to the next level, all the while playing within a true team concept.
  • Strength and Conditioning Program: CMass integrates a Strength & Conditioning Program especially designed for female athletes. The Program emphasizes core strengthening; ACL prehab exercises, aerobic conditioning and speed improvement. The Program is a critical component of the Winter Training Sessions and has been a staple of CMass from the beginning.
  • Full –Time Goalie Coach: CMass employs a full-time GK Coach and also offers clinics throughout the winter months. We also add to our GK coaching staff during the summer recruiting season.

4) What would the commitment be if I make one of the CMass teams?

The 2011-2012 season can be described as follows:

  • Fall Season: the high school teams will participate in some of the “fun”(non-recruiting ) tournaments: Harvard University 7 v 7, UMASS/Amherst 6 v 6, The Chill tournament on October 23 at Devens, Massachusetts, and the Boston University 4 v 4 on September 25. The high school teams will also participate in the Maureen O’Shea Memorial Tournament in Connecticut on November 6th. The teams will practice every other weekend. The focus in the Fall is to develop team camaraderie and to introduce new players to the pace, skill level and strategies necessary to compete effectively at the club level.
  • The Middle School Teams will participate in at least two Fall Tournaments: BU 4 v 4 on September 25th, the Chill on October 22, the Harvard University 7 v 7; Brown University 5 v 5, and the Novemburrr Tournament in New Hampshire in early November. The teams will practice every other weekend. Practices are held on Sundays. The practice times are dependent upon field availability.
  • Winter Training Season: the indoor training sessions typically begin the second Sunday in November until the third week in March. The Middle School Team will practice at TeamWorks in Northborough, typically 10 AM to noon. The High School Teams will practice at Hit Quarters in Shrewsbury, typically 9 to 11 AM. Attendance at all sessions is very important, as it promotes team chemistry, sharpens individual stick skills and allows our coaches to implement our offensive and defensive tactics and strategies. Local college coaches will, on occasion, conduct clinics for all CMass teams.
The Winter Season also features the Strength and Conditioning Program, described above. The Program is led by Diane David, a Certified Fitness Specialist.
  • Spring season: the high school teams practice very rarely, as we realize that the high school season often demands a 6 day per week commitment. We may have an occasional Sunday practice, to foster team camaraderie.
  • Middle School teams: there will be a practice session, scrimmage or a tournament on all Saturday afternoons in May, with the exception of Memorial Day Weekend. These sessions are intended to sharpen stick skills and to introduce full field tactics and strategies that will be used in the summer tournament season.
  • Summer Season: we begin our practice seasons in early June, immediately following the high school season. We practice or scrimmage on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the end of July at the new Fay School Athletic Complex in Southborough. There will be at least three mandatory recruiting tournaments for our high school teams. Mandatory tournaments are very competitive and require a full roster. The summer tournament season includes the months of June and July.

Practice sessions are mandatory. Absences from practices will definitely affect one’s playing time in the tournaments. Any absences from practices must be approved by the coaching staff.

The 2011 spring and summer practice and tournament schedule can be found on our web site:www.cmasslacrosse.net.

The Middle School Teams will participate in four tournaments, mostly local, but we are not averse to scheduling one travel tournament, most likely in New Jersey.

5) Who can join Central Mass Club Lacrosse?

High school players must live within a 50-mile radius of Assumption College as per NCAA rules. These are no geographic restriction for Middle School players.

6) How are CMass teams organized?

Teams are typically organized according to High School Year of Graduation (YOG). This is especially important at the high school level, where college coaches greatly prefer to evaluate players with the same YOG.

The Gold Team plays the most competitive schedule and is comprised of those players who desire to continue their careers in college. The Gold Team is typically comprised of all juniors (2013s).Gold Team players can expect to play in at least two highly competitive travel tournaments.

The Green Team is typically comprised of 2014s. Green Team members can expect to play in at least one highly competitive travel tournament. The Summer Tournament Schedule will be determined at the conclusion of the tryout period.

At the Middle School level, it is not uncommon to combine players with different YOGs, depending on skill level and playing experience. Example: a team comprised of 7/8th graders (2016 and 2017 YOG).

We will field a 5/6th grade team (2018/2019) in 2011-2012.

7) What does the Team Fee include?

The Team Fee includes all coaches’ fees, indoor and outdoor facility rentals, a uniform, reversible pinnie, apparel package, insurance, registration fees for the mandatory tournaments and web site administration. The Team Fee is paid in two segments. The first payment is due upon selection to a team; the second payment is due by December 31, 2011.

The Team Fee in 2010-2011 was $1375 for a new player and $1300 for a returning player, reflecting the fact that a returning player already has a uniform, practice shorts and a reversible. It is expected that the Team Fee for the 2011-2012 season will be a similar amount.

All CMass players must have a current US Lacrosse membership.

8) Will there be additional fees?

Additional fees shall include:

  • Non- mandatory tournaments are billed on an a la carte basis. Families will be responsible for a portion of the Team Entry fee and coach’s fees.
  • Transportation, hotel and food costs associated with the summer tournaments.
  • For selected summer tournaments, CMass organizes a charter bus, a team hotel and Team Dinners for our players. The costs associated with these charters are billed separately.

9) What if I am unable to attend a mandatory tournament?

In most cases, important family events (weddings, Family Reunions) are known far in advance of the summer tournaments. These commitments should be made known to the coaching staff as soon as possible. Unforeseen events (funerals, etc.) will be reviewed on a case by case basis. The tournament entry fee (as part of the Team Fee) will not be returned.

10) Do you offer a family discount?

Yes, we offer a discount of $100 for each additional player in our Program from the same family.

11) When are tryouts?

All tryouts will be held at 9/11 Memorial Field in Southborough, Massachusetts. Directions to 9/11 Memorial Field can be found on the CMass web site: www.cmasslacrosse.net. The tryout fee is $50 per player, for an unlimited number of tryouts.
